Indian Spiced Skinny Black Bean Burgers with Yogurt Sauce

I end up making black bean burgers about once a week, and they’re different every time. These burgers show a basic method that can be adapted to whatever you’ve got in the fridge. They’re low calorie, quick, and cheap! This particular variation has a spicy, slightly tangy Indian kick to it. I served them on thin style 100 calorie buns with shredded cabbage, feta cheese, and spicy yogurt sauce. There were also the typical burger fixings of ketchup and mustard on the bun. It was delicious, and full of flavor.

Crispy on the outside, rich and tasty on the inside – these vegetarian burgers are just good eats. They’re filling, delicious and nutritious. They keep me satisfied and full of energy for hours.

Nutrition (includes patty and 1 ounce of yogurt sauce – bun and cheese are extra):

Basic Burger Ingredients:

  • 1 14oz can of black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup plain bread crumb
  • Cooking spray

Indian style Seasoning:

  • 1/2 small onion (finely diced)
  • 1 jalapeno (finely diced)
  • 1 tablespoon Vindaloo style curry paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground tumeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Yogurt Sauce:

  • 4 oz plain non-fat Greek yogurt (such as Chobani)
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce

Recommended toppings and condiments

  • Bread of your choosing
  • Shredded lettuce or cabbage
  • Feta Cheese
  • Ketchup and Mustard

Directions:

  • Add all ingredients (excluding spray and yogurt sauce) to a mixing bowl
  • Mix with a spoon to distribute seasoning
  • Crush beans with a potato masher or the back or a fork until about half of them are crushed and filling will hold together
  • Score bean mixture in bowl into 4 even sections
  • Form each section into a 1/2 inch thick patty
  • Heat a non-stick skillet to medium heat and spray generously with cooking spray
  • Cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until patties are crispy and golden
  • Serve on bun with a spoonful of yogurt sauce and condiments of choice
