Favorite Red Sangria with Cognac & Berries

Sangria with cognac really sneaks up on you with the alcohol content. It tastes fruity, a little sweet, and pretty innocent – then BAM you’re wondering when walking became so precarious, and ditching your sexy party heels for some mismatched socks. Just me….? This is a sangria of the sneakily-strong variety, and perfect for sharing with friends.

We usually double this recipe because wine is pretty popular ’round these parts (my apartment), and the pitcher is drained quickly when we have guests. It tastes great with everything, but pairs spectacularly with Spanish style food and anything grilled.

  • 1 bottle red wine, I prefer a cabernet sauvignon. Use something inexpensive but tasty. My usual go-to is “Rex Goliath”. Cheap and reliable – yay.
  • 1/2 cup Courvoisier cognac (or your favorite)
  • 1 and 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 shots triple sec
  • 1 and 1/2 cup lemon lime soda pop
  • 1/2 apple, diced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3/4 cup frozen sweetened raspberries or berries of your choosing
  • 1/2 orange (sliced)

  • Add frozen raspberries, apple, and orange to a large pitcher, and lightly muddle with a wooden spoon
  • Add remaining ingredients, finishing with soda
  • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to develop. Overnight is best
  • Serve chilled

  1. I love sangria and I love that you can add absolutely any type of fruit your heart so desires. The last time i made it I used lemons, limes, apples, strawberries, tangerines and pears. It was sooo good!

BTW yours look so refreshing! Yum.

  2. Looks like a great idea for Christmas Eve! Your dad and I were at Cafe Sevilla recently and we were both surprised that they used Sprite in both their Red and White Sangria’s. We tried both and they were great, but I am anxious to try your recipe. Thanks Julie!

    • Glad you liked it! I was surprised about the addition of sprite too when we started exploring recipes. Seems to me that club soda and a bit of simple syrup would be a good substitution, but you really can’t argue with the convenience factor of a can of sprite.
